Very enjoyable thanks. Now back to reality and a return to work for a rest after a hard week's scuba diving liveaboard in the Red Sea.

Very nice, any pics?

Wife and I did our PADI certs in Taipan (near Guam) several years ago. Amazing place for scuba; the water was crystal clear for hundreds of feet in every direction. We also saw a shark in the open water, albeit a meter long white tip. Got a bit close to a Lion Fish too.

No pics, lots of video though which will take some time to edit. I might put it up on the web somewhere in due course but somehow I suspect you'd not be that happy if I added 2GB of 720p video to the NTHW hosting account :P

A metre long white tip is small ;) I've been within 4 metres of a good sized Oceanic White tip in the past. This time round I was able to snorkel with a pod of wild dolphins (much better than the tame ones captured at theme parks), got within a meter of a decent sized hawksbill turtle, and all sorts of other stuff, both large and small. And then there are the dive sites themselves, a mix of wreck and reefs..

The White and Black tips are small, common and more or less harmless sharks. An Oceanic White tip, though, those things are big and I'd not want to be anywhere near one. Aside from Bull Sharks, Oceanic Whites are right up there with attacks on humans and can be very aggressive and senseless like Tiger/Bull Sharks. Was it by accident or did you dive to see one?

In Thailand they offer diving with Bulls and you get an panic button to blast some air off the tank and get to the surface, fast. Got to be crazy to do that kind of dive.

We went to Hawaii a few years ago and did a cage dive with Galapagos sharks. It was great fun but the sea was rough that day. The sharks are way bigger under water than what they appear on the surface; fairly chunky sharks, kind of like the whites.

The Oceanic was circling our decompression stop. Yes decompression so we couldn't get out! There was a pair of them gradually getting closer and closer.

They are supposedly the 4th most dangerous type and were blamed for some of the problems around the Sharm el Sheik area last December.

I'll have to dig out a photo.

So how did you get out of that one? Did they lose interest and swim away or?

Very cool anyway. I'm jealous, although, maybe not of the potentially being eaten part.

I was hunting around last night for some pics of Taipan. If I find any, I'll post them up.
