How many 66 tick source servers could you run on the new Dell PowerEdge R210 II you have just ordered? I know css tends to be more cpu heavy (£161.99 a month is a VERY good price for the specs :D )

Intel Xeon E3-1240 Processor - Holy mother of god, these processors are on another level than some of the others, it received a score of 7168 on http://www.cpubenchmark.net, thats 1873 MORE than the Intel Xeon X3450 (which are in the r210 plus priced at £149.99) + the R210 II have 8GB ECC 1333MHz DDR3 Ram rather than four gig :)

Hi,

The new R210 II's are very powerful but we've only done BF3 testing on them so far. Given that the normal R210's can hold around 200+ slots of source, you'd expect the II to hold even more.

I thought the Intel Core2Duo Extreme could hold around 200 slots or was that before the engine got a few updates? If I was looking to achieve about 500 slots would it be more cost effective to run two smaller dedicated servers?

The Core2duo range has no chance of hosting that many source slots. At a max I'd say around 100 depending on plugins on either the Pro or Extreme.

Source is still a relatively CPU heavy game and to cover 500 slots, you'd need a min of 2 x R210 II's to allow for headroom.

How many Battlefield 3 slots is it estimated that the Dell PowerEdge R210 II can handle? I think I read somewhere that you expected something like one 64 slot server per core meaning 256 slot (4*64)? I just want to see if this is correct as the clan is currently arguing on what servers to install on our R210 II when battlefield 3 goes live.

Cheers

At first, we'll be recommending customers start with 3 x 64 and then a four can be added once it's confirmed all is well.

Due to the lack of available beta time to fully test 64 slot servers, a little bit of caution I think would be wise to start out. 4 x 64 should be no probs for the R210 II's which is essentially one per core but no hard set affinity.

What if two 64 slot servers were installed on it. How many 32 slot servers would then be recommended? I think I saw some recommendation of 2 per core; is that still valid or has that changed after the beta?

2 x 32 should be approx equal to 1 x 64 when comparing like with like maps as the game scales in a linear fashion. However, if you compare 2 x 32 Metro servers with 1 x 64 Caspian Border, the combined usage of the Metro servers would be lower.
